October 13, 7 pm
Susan Rothenberg is in conversation with Michael Auping. Prior to the opening of the exhibition Susan Rothenberg: Moving in Place, the artist and curator of the exhibition discuss the development of Rothenberg’s imagery, from the ground-breaking early horse paintings of the mid-1970s to her fragmented and spinning self-portraits. The artist will also discuss the influence of her move from New York to New Mexico in 1990 and the effect of that landscape/environment on her palette as well as the suggestion of narrative in her subsequent work.

Book signing at 5:30 pm The Modern, in association with the publisher Prestel, has produced a major book in conjunction with the exhibition, Susan Rothenberg: Moving in Place. Full-color illustrations and foldouts of some of Rothenberg’s best-known early works as well as exciting new paintings afford readers the chance to observe the evolution of the artist’s themes. The catalogue includes an introduction by Barbara Buhler Lynes, the Emily Fisher Landau Director of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center and curator of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum; an essay by Michael Auping addressing Rothenberg’s painting process and the eclectic influences that have helped shape her figurative and spatial distortions; and rare, unpublished commentaries by the artist on works in the exhibition.

The book is available in The Modern Shop ($45; $36 for members).
